Rooted and Rising: Cultivating Compassion-Based Equanimity in Times of Upheaval

with Joey Weber, Ph.D

Sunday, August 24, 2025

10 am - 12 noon US Eastern Time

on Zoom

In this time of escalating political, economic, and social distress, where the impacts are magnified by targeted policies, instability, and trauma, how can we stay grounded, compassionate, and connected?

This program introduces compassion-based equanimity as a vital resource for resilience, personal well-being, and community integrity. Drawing from contemplative traditions, somatic trauma-informed tools, and Dr. Joey Weber’s secular and practical model of equanimity, we explore how inner balance becomes a foundation for sustainable engagement and collective care.

Dr. Weber’s research frames equanimity not just as a personal trait but as a practical, community-strengthening skill, one that enhances social cohesion, reduces interpersonal reactivity, and helps individuals and groups navigate uncertainty with greater clarity and connection. His model breaks equanimity down into clear, learnable components, offering a roadmap for cultivating emotional regulation, interpersonal diplomacy, and inclusive ethical awareness.

Together, we will explore how these skills can serve as assets for resilience, particularly in communities facing systemic targeting, displacement, or loss. Through mindfulness, embodied presence, reflection, and shared inquiry, participants will strengthen their capacity to stay present and connected, even when the world around them feels fractured.

Whether you are a caregiver, educator, advocate, faith leader, immigrant, student, or simply someone trying to show up with courage, this space is for you.

Joey Weber, PhD

Dr. Joey Weber’s lifelong exploration of equanimity began in a Tibetan monastic community where, as a child, he was introduced to the concepts of mindfulness and equanimity. His fascination with these teachings inspired his academic journey, culminating in a PhD on barriers to equanimity. This means he is one of the world’s first scientists to examine equanimity through a Western scientific lens, establishing new pathways to understanding this essential quality. His groundbreaking research led to the development of the Equanimity Barriers Scale, a pioneering tool for identifying obstacles that hinder the cultivation of equanimity. These early experiences deeply shaped his worldview and professional pursuits, driving him to bridge Eastern philosophical traditions with Western science.

Currently, Dr. Weber lectures in Health and Social Care at the University of Bolton, Manchester. He also works as a mindfulness consultant, trainer and speaks about equanimity across the globe. His acclaimed book, Why Mindfulness Is Not Enough: Unlocking Compassion with Equanimity, has been translated into Dutch and Italian. This book offers a rich blend of case studies, guided meditations, and practical techniques to enhance mental health and foster equanimity.
