About Us - Atlanta Mindfulness Institute

The Atlanta Mindfulness Institute is dedicated to bringing mindfulness-based programs to the Southeast. Several times a year we offer Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction classes to the general public. We also offer specialized classes to groups, such as psychotherapists, school aged children, teachers, medical professionals, and business groups.

In addition to training classes, the Institute promotes exploration of ways in which mindfulness may be integrated into various settings, such as psychotherapy, medical practice, the classroom, or the office. We provide ongoing training and supervision for professionals who have taken a MBSR class or one of our introductory professional training programs, as well as for professionals who already have an established mindfulness practice and want to join with others in enhancing their knowledge. The institute is a place for professionals to meet, share ideas, and network.

Finally, we offer opportunities to conduct research using Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction as the research protocol. Individuals who are interested in using MBSR as an intervention are welcome to have their subjects join our classes.

It is important to note that our curriculum was developed by Jon-Kabat Zinn and the staff of the The Center for MIndfulness. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, as taught in our program, has been the subject of hundreds of research studies over the past 35 years. This research has shown that MBSR is an effective intervention for a wide array of many common mental and physical health problems, such as depression, anxiety and panic disorders, family stress, chronic pain, sleep disturbance, coping with cancer, gastro-intestinal diseases, type 2 diabetes, attention deficit disorder, eating disorders, heart disease, and addictions. This research is based on a very specific program as taught by teachers trained by the Center for Mindfulness. The program includes 8 sessions, an all-day retreat, and comprises 27 hours of class time. The benefits of other courses calling themselves Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, but offered in different formats, have not been well researched. Therefore, they may not be as effective in improving mental and physical health.
